Our Primary School English & Writing programs focuses on accelerating our students’ ability across:
- Spelling and vocabulary
- Grammar, and its application
- Comprehension (reading, understanding, inferring and analysing)
- Writing
Writing is a pertinent part of these programs, as we find there are not enough hours in the school day for children to become extremely capable in this learning area. Consequently, we alternate between creative and persuasive writing (we find information reports are more commonly explored at school) and essay-writing for older students.
The writing component of these programs:
- Ensures students understand how to brainstorm, plan, write and revise/edit their own work effectively
- Teaches students to apply a range of creative language devices and techniques within their writing
- Allows students to understand how to structure different texts in the most engaging and creative manner
- Teaches students to create a strong tone in their writing, whilst maintaining a sophisticated level of coherency and expression
- Helps students understand how to write in a way that appeals to the intended audience of a text
- Develops students' creative and critical thinking skills and the associated written expression of these ideas
- Encourages students to begin developing an interest in this difficult skill and understand that writing is important and fun!

NAPLAN
We don’t believe students should stress about NAPLAN. However, for many Year 3 students, it is one of the first formal tests they face at school.
Preparing for tests should encompass more than just mock tests; such an approach is based on rote-learning methods which encourage students to simply memorise solutions to various problems. Instead, we provide meaningful support by encouraging our students to truly understand how to approach an array of different question styles.
This method has been embedded into all of our exam preparation programs, focused on developing students’ thinking skills and accompanying knowledge and capabilities. Test practice is incorporated on a meaningful scale, to ensure students are also developing related confidence and time-management skills.
NAPLAN preparation is incorporated into our English/Writing and Maths programs for:
- Year 2 students, during Term 4
- Year 3 students, during Term 1 and at the beginning of Term 2
Students in Years 3 and 5 continue to develop their skills and knowledge in the appropriate English/Writing and Maths programs. Exam strategies and related confidence can be enhanced through our NAPLAN mock test and review sessions.
